Striking First - Pre-emptive Striking In Martial Arts

In recent years there has been an influx of information in
the martial arts media concerning pre-emptive striking and
whether you should use it as a part of your self-defence
training or not.

This media frenzy generated a lot of interest in the subject
(for and against) so this article is going to provide a slightly
different approach to the issue and bring into the equation how
this affects martial art teachers from the perspective of adults
AND children.

==========
ADULTS
==========

O.K., first of all, should we teach hitting first at all?
I think, yes, we should. However it is obviously not as
simple as that, even when only taking into account adults.

Where adults are concerned, if you choose to teach them
pre-emption, you need to make it clear that it is a last
resort! Also you need to make it clear that they MUST be
in fear for their safety for it to be acceptable.

They need to be sure an attack on them is imminent
essentially.

Of course, you must have faith in your students to suggest
such a direct course of action - you must trust they won’t
abuse such knowledge!

If in ANY doubt DO NOT teach it at all!

============
CHILDREN
============

Where children are concerned hitting first, and teaching such
strategies, is in my humble opinion a big NO NO! You cannot
really compare situations a child and an adult might find
themselves in (perhaps many of you will disagree?).

Indeed I actually think to teach hitting first to children as
part of a martial arts class is irresponsible and dangerous.

It would be highly likely to create situations at school and
home where the child could justify his hitting people first
by saying his or her martial arts instructor said it was
acceptable!

Obviously there may be the rare occasion where it would be
in their best interest to do so, BUT I feel this is
outweighed by the potential problems it could cause.

While teaching children I think the best course of action
is to focus on building strong character traits through
structured physical training and avoid the ‘nastier’ side
of the arts until they are older with a little more life
experience.

==============
CONCLUSION
==============

It is (obviously) hard to make a concrete conclusion about
such a subject.

I feel for those (adult) students you trust totally,
highlighting pre-emptive strikes as a viable option when they
have no other option is acceptable.

For children I think, as stated above, it is not necessary and
the time is better spent developing their characters and physical skills.

After all, they grow up fast enough, and showing the grittier
aspects of the arts only serves to unnecessarily speed up
this process.

Hurricane Resort Repair Progress Report for Cancun and Riviera Maya

Are you considering a visit to Cancun or the Riviera Maya, but are concerned with the damage caused by Hurricane Wilma this past October? You are not alone. I will share information from unbiased travel agents and travel industry experts that have seen the repair progress first hand. Hopefully, this will ease some of your concerns and get you back to the beach with a Margarita in hand!

The downtown Cancun region was the hardest hit of the resort areas in the Yucatan Peninsula and vacationers would be wise to avoid Cancun until late summer 2006. If you are a bargain hunter, you might be hard pressed to find discounts. Many of the overflow visitors scheduled to stay in Cancun have filled the resorts in the Riviera Maya.

As you might expect, the work to rebuild the tourist areas of Cancun and the Riviera Maya started immediately after Wilma had passed. The Mexican Government and the people of Mexico are working day and night to restore their beautiful resort destinations. They look forward to welcoming you back to relax on their white sand beaches. When you do return, you will find that many of the beaches in the Riviera Maya have been expanded. Some have decreased; it varies from resort to resort. Some of the properties are listed below. Cancun will begin a $20 million beach restoration project in December 2005.

The airport is fine, and undergoing minor repairs. Here is a breakdown of some of the individual resorts in the Riviera Maya that are accepting vacationers. You can find additional details and photos at GoAwayTravel.com.

Boracay, Philippines - Incredible Holiday Value

Few can argue that the tiny island in central Philippines known as “Boracay” is nothing less than spectacular. With a 3 kilometer long sugar white beach, some of the lowest prices in the world and perhaps best of all plenty of good ole’ Filipino charm and hospitality, Boracay is truly a wonder to behold.

Anyone who has been there will tell you that Boracay, or “Bora” as the locals call it, is a wonderful place to spend a vacation. During the off season (from June to mid-October) this small resort town slows way down, making it a favorite for anyone looking to spend some quiet time on the beach. Backpackers love to visit Boracay beach during the off season where they can stay in lower class hostels and villas just behind the beachfront resorts, from rates as low as $15 a night!

Families love Boracay because it is a safe, affordable and offers plenty entertainment options for those on the go. Mom will love the vendors selling jewelry on the boardwalk, and growing number of fashionable gift shops, selling everything from low cost bathing suits to Filipino pasalubong. (or “gifts from your trip”) Dad will surely enjoy a $5 massage on the beach, plenty of cold drinks and over 100 great restaurants all within a short walk of the beach.

The kids and those more active will enjoy plenty of water sports in Boracay. Just a few years ago, all powered water sports were prohibited, but now there is a flourishing water spots industry that includes jet skis, water skis, wake boarding, knee boarding and parasailing. You can even rent your own speed boat to cruise around the island in style, or a more traditional “banca” boat, for a day of island hopping.

During peak season (from Mid-October to May) Boracay beach is absolutely bustling with activity. If you plan to visit during peak season, be sure to plan your trip at least 4-5 months in advance, as all of the best rooms and resorts fill up very quickly. During peak season, Boracay has a very festive atmosphere and is crawling with people, events and activities virtually every day.

For scuba divers, Boracay has a number of high quality dive resorts located right on the famous white beach. From there you can dive any one of 40+ dive spots located in the waters surrounding Boracay. Since the water is warm in the Philippines year round, wet suits are an option for many who enjoy taking it off, for an easy dive around Bora.

My personal favorite is to rent a motorcycle for about $25 a day and “explore” the island, completely on my own. There is so much to see and explore behind the beachfront resorts, including a completely different culture just steps away from the famous boardwalk. A short drive to the back of the island for example, and you can explore the famous bat caves, enjoy some local cuisine at any number of beach front cafes (for
